Yesterday afternoon,I was standing on the top of the Three Gorges Dam while the fireworks and firecrackers drowned out the carnival crowd .Since I set off from Chong Qing on May 8, I witnessed how a dam had finally reached the height which is looked up to by the whole world , thus making me become one of the crowd.
In front of the dam is the high gorges with its flat lakes, and behind the dam is the turbulent river.Standing on the summit of Three Gorges Dam, I saw three Yangtze Rivers.
One is living in the poems.Looking down from the Three Gorges Dam, I could see the new ZiGui city vaguely, where is the hometown of Qu Yuan. At that time, Qu Yuan, in both grief and indignation, stood along the Yangtze River near his home, and faced the surging water. He composed his famous poem Ask the sky :” River flows to the east but it does not overflow. Who knows the reason? ” Since he drowned himself in the river, later generations have always been calling back his soul by rowing a dragon boat. Now, a dam lies near his home, the poet's soul may rest in peace.
Another Yangtze River which lived in the past surrounded with tears and sweat. When the first day we arrived at YiChang, the weakest part inside our hearts was hit by a large ad image. In the image. There were five naked men struggling to tow a boat along the bank, and their most intimate parts were totally exposed to people. Only their shoulders were covered with the towline deep into their muscles. Today, the naked boat-trackers have been developed into a tourist commodity, which is naturally handled by the big hands of market economy. However, their nudes also shows that the Yangtze River inspired the poets to write as well as making the lifes of people nearby immersed in the boundless sea full of tears and sweat. Stand on the summit of the dam and face the high gorges with its flat lake and quiet water, we see countless boat wrecks in the rapids and countless roofs and people that were submerged by the roaring flood in 1998.
Another Yangtze River lives in the contemporary era. Here the present should be dated from nation-building strategy written by Mr.Sun Zhongshan in 1917 where the Three Gorges Dam was first mentioned. At that time, he was also impressed by this grand dream. He wrote: “ The benefits to people will be very great and the encouragement to commerce will be very strong.”
Here the contemporary era should include February 1953, when Mao Zedong boarded the Wuhan Yangtze River warship. Many people have mentioned the poem Mao wrote in the summer of 1956: “ The flat lake comes out of the high gorges ”, but they don’t know three years ago when the moment he got on the Yangtze River warship, he said to Lin Yishan, the expert of water conservancy, “ Why not stick a little hole at the Three Gorges thus finishing the whole task in one step? ”
Here the contemporary era should also include April 3,1992. It was the over 2000 votes that made the resolution of building Three Gorges Project passed on The Fifth Session of the Seventh National People's Congress. After so many ups and downs, the Three Gorges dream could finally begin to realize when China was strong enough. Here the contemporary era should also include December 14, 1994 when the first bulldozer entered San Douping in YiChang, HuBei, the Three Gorges Project started. Here the contemporary era should also include today,May 20, 2006, when the Three Gorges Dam finished the last concrete pouring.
Yesterday, I stood on the summit of the Dam. I saw a concrete dam carrying renaissance dream of the the 1.3 billion Chinese people. Chinese people has built a new Great Wall above the surging Yangtze River, with diligence and wisdom. I saw the Yangtze River no matter living in the poem or the past or the contemporary era, there are our endless dreams in it. Dreams are immortal. For the dream of we all, a Three Gorges Dam is only one chapter of it.
